Youngsters reach Bargari in big numbers, serve langar

The third anniversary of the Bargari incident on Sunday drew hundreds of teenagers. Stirred into action by their families and religious sentiments, these youngsters accompanied their parents or fellow villagers to reach the venue.

Jasmine Kaur, a Class XI student in Bargari, said: “We have been seeking justice in the sacrilege incidents and punishment to those responsible for killing two innocent protesters for three years now. But nothing has been done. It hurts me deeply.”

“Since June 16, I have been participating in the dharna every day in the evening. I have also been serving langar to those sitting on the dharna for the last over four months,” she said.

Armanjot Singh, a Class IX student of Doad village in Faridkot, reached the venue with his friend. He was also helping a team of youths from his village in serving langar. “I don’t know much about the incidents and those killed in police firing, but I have been told about the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib.”

Rubal Preet, a Class VI student, and Akashdeep Singh of Class IX from Sadhuwala village of Ferozepur, accompanied the village elders to Bargari. They also performed sewa. Santosh Kaur from Tappa Mandi in Bathinda is in the town with her son, daughter-in-law and two small grandchildren, who were wearing T-shirts with pictures of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Santosh Kaur said they had come on a motorcycle. “We are here to pay homage to the martyrs who laid their life for Guru Granth Sahib.”

The organisers are upbeat over the participation of the youth. “If still the government fails to act, we will continue our protest,” said Panthic leader Baljit Singh Daduwal.
