Sangrur, December 5

The state Jails Department will seek funds from the Centre to equip all prisons with required infrastructure.

This was stated by ADGP (Jails) Rohit Chaudhary here today while inspecting the Sangrur Jail.

“We have decided to seek special funds from the Centre for the modernisation of all jails. We want to install body scanners at least in 12 jails, but it is costly as each scanner costs around Rs 1 crore,” he said.

On the use of mobile phones inside jails, the ADGP said at present a majority of jails have 3-G jammers, but criminals lodged in jails were using 4-G Internet and other services.

“We have started the process to upgrade our jammers to 4-G. Apart from this, we have also started rewarding our employees who have been confiscating drugs and mobile phones,” the ADGP said.

He said they had started the process of shifting inmates from overcrowded jails to other jails to prevent any law and order problem.

“We have decided to separate gangsters, who want to shun crime from hardcore criminals. We are creating special barracks where our employees will help gangsters if they want to pursue studies or other vocational courses,” he said.

Sangrur SSP Sandeep Garg, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajdeep Singh Brar and DSP Satpal Sharma were also present during the inspection.
