Two die of cholera in Hoshiarpur

Two cholera deaths were reported in the city on Monday. The victims were identified as Rita Tina, a resident of Kamalpur, and Sham Sunder of Dhanna Ram Mohalla. The cause of death of Yadavik (3) was yet to be ascertained.

During the past three days, the number of cholera patients at the local Civil Hospital has been on the rise. The count has crossed the 150-mark. On Monday, around 65 patients came to the hospital.

District epidemiologist Dr Shailesh Kumar said, “After the initial rain of the season, mixing of sewage in the water supply has caused contamination of drinking water.” Dr Shailesh said Yadavik had died probably due to an insect bite.

Civil Surgeon Dr Renu Sood and teams of the Health Department visited the affected areas on Monday. Dr Sood said at least 15 teams went door to door and distributed chlorine tablets and ORS packets. The Health Department has received about 4 lakh chlorine tablets.

Meanwhile, former Union Minister Santosh Chaudhary, local legislator and Minister of State for Industry Sunder Sham Arora’s daughter Dr Shivani Arora Puri, Deepak Puri and other offficials visited the hospital to enquire about the patients’ health.
