Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar today led the demand for replacement of Lok Sabha party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, asking for Adhir to be replaced with Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor.

Jakhar told a CWC sub-group consisting of Congress leaders P Chidambaram, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia among others that communication was not Adhir’s high point.

“Adhir Ranjan is a fighter and should be used in party organisation to lead protests and campaigns. In Lok Sabha you need a leader who can articulate party’s strategy and counter the BJP. I think Tharoor should replace Adhir as Congress leader in the Lok Sabha,” said Jakhar, former Gurdaspur MP.

CWC members admitted many MPs and leaders privately sought Adhir’s replacement citing his faux pas in LS recently where he asked the BJP how Abrogation of Article 370 would impact Kashmir status in the UN. The CWC had to clarify later that Kashmir was India’s internal issue. Adhir again embarrassed the Congress on Thursday by comparing the Kashmir situation after repeal of special status and state’s bifurcation with a “Nazi concentration camp”.

Some MPs also told the CWC that a daily meeting of MPs should be held to articulate the party’s stand on key issues when Parliament is in session. — TNS
