Jalandhar, January 9

The State Teachers’ Games, announced in December last year, have been postponed for the second time. Earlier scheduled to be held from December 26 to 28, the games were postponed by the Education Department from January 11 to 13 in view of the panchayat elections.

The impending annual exams of schoolstudents and the Lohri festival on January 13 have been cited as the reasons for the postponement this time.

A letter released by the Education Department today states that due to the annual exams of students which are about to begin soon, teachers were ensuring qualitative studies. Besides, Lohri is also round the corner so the games are being postponed till the next orders, it states.

The event was pegged as an initiative by the department to ensure better sports awareness among teachers. Trials for the games had taken place for various sporting categories across the state after which many teachers were selected.

While the department had previously made commitments to provide free bedding, lodging, track suits and transportation to all teachers participating during the games, these too had subsequently been withdrawn by the department while issuing letters that teachers have to arrange their own beddings and transportation for the games.
