Former Deputy CM and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal appeared before the SIT regarding the Kotkapura police firing in 2015. Speaking to the media later, he claimed Justice Ranjit Singh Commission was a ploy to divert public attention from the "abject failure" of the Congress government on several fronts.

He claimed successive Congress governments had set up SITs only to implicate rivals. “I was questioned on the directions I gave on October 14, 2015, when I was out of the state after duly informing the CM.

"I made it clear to SIT officials that they had been given the mandate to malign the SAD and that was why I had been called for questioning”. He pointed out that no action was initiated against radicals elements who had targeted his vehicle in Amritsar recently.

Claiming the SIT members posed irrelevant questions based on mere hearsay, Sukhbir said he had never met film actor Akshay Kumar outside Punjab.
