Ropar, May 3

Following the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Election Commission (EC), the nomination papers of the Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Anandpur Sahib Narinder Singh Shergill were accepted by the Returning Officer-cum-Ropar Deputy Commissioner here today.

The High Court had on Thursday quashed the orders of the Returning Officer, who had rejected the nomination papers of Shergill.

Today, Shergill reached Ropar and took out the soil brought from the High Court and put it on his forehead and even tasted it saying that the justice had prevailed.

Shergill was debarred from contesting the elections by the Election Commission for not submitting details of the election expenditure incurred by him during previous elections, following which he moved the High Court on April 30.

Allowing the plea late on Thursday evening after hearing the matter for almost four hours, the Division Bench of Justice Daya Chaudhary and Justice Sudhir Mittal had asserted: “After hearing the arguments raised by counsel for the parties and perusal of the record available, the writ petition is allowed and the impugned order (of rejection) dated April 30 and June 7, 2018, are set aside. The nomination papers of the petitioner be accepted in case the same is otherwise in order.”

Following this the Election Commission had directed the Returning Officer to follow the directions of the HC.

Shergill, who reached the office of the Returning Officer in afternoon, said he had full faith in the court and was optimistic of getting justice and contest the election.
