The Punjab State SC Commission has come to the aid of a Dalit woman who was facing harassment on account of false complaints.

Chairperson of the commission Tejinder Kaur said Anju Luthra, wife of late Krishan Gopal, a resident of Phagwara, had complained to the commission that Joginder Pal, Paramjit Kaur and Dipsy of Satnampura (Kapurthala) had been constantly harassing and defaming her by lodging false complaints against her. All complaints were found false in the police investigation and the District Attorney had recommended registration of a case against the complainants under the SC Act. However, even after two years, no case had been registered by the Kapurthala police.

The chairperson also said the probe into the matter was handed over to SC commission member Gian Chand Diwali. A Special Investigation Team comprising three SP-rank officers was constituted and probe completed.

After the probe report said Anju was correct, the commission ordered registration of a case under the SC Act against the people concerned. The Kapurthala police registered a case under Section 182, IPC, and Section 3(1)(9) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act against Joginder, Paramjit and Dipsy.
