The state government has sanctioned Rs111.53 crore under the Punjab Rural Water and Sanitation Sector Improvement Project (PRWSSIP) for 100 villages of 440 in the district, where the quality of drinking water is poor.
This was revealed by Kanwalpreet Brar, Deputy Commissioner. She said the objective was improved water supply and sanitation services to the rural community. She said tenders had been floated and work would start shortly.
At present, water supply schemes based on tubewells are covering all villages in the district, but since groundwater sources are found to be unsustainable over a period, it has become necessary to use surface water from available resources for drinking water supply schemes, she added.
