At least seven masked men, armed with pistols, intercepted a cash van on the Adampur-Bhogpur road around 3 pm today and looted Rs1.15 crore.

The vehicle was on its way to Adampur from Bhogpur to load cash in ATMs. The robbers chased it in an Indigo car, which had no registration number plate, and on three Pulsar motorcycles.

They soon overtook the van and forced the driver to stop it and come out along with the other occupants — a supervisor, a helper and two security guards. The guards had a double-barrelled gun each, but they offered no resistance to the robbers.

After taking away the cash, the accused dispersed. The police nabbed one of the robbers at Cheema village in Kartarpur. When he opened fire on the cops, they retaliated. He was injured in the shootout.

Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Jalandhar Rural, Balkar Singh said, “The unidentified robber, who got shot in the leg, has been admitted to a private hospital here. The Indigo has been impounded. Its number plate was found inside. No money has been recovered so far. We will trace the other robbers soon.”
