Ropar, September 10

The Punjab Revenue Officers’ Association is up in arms against Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma after he lodged a complaint with Financial Commissioner, Revenue, against Morinda tehsildar alleging that the latter bunked his duty as executive magistrate, when a mob was trying to lynch two women in Barmana village near Morinda.

Demanding the SSP’s transfer, the association in a letter signed by its president Gurdev Singh Dham alleged that Sharma first humiliated the tehsildar, Amandeep Singh Chawala, by making him wait at the police station for long and then used derogatory language against him. It said the SSP also crossed his limit by writing against Chawala directly to the higher authorities without taking the DC into confidence.

It was on September 2 when a mob gheraoed a murder accused’s wife and daughter at Barmana village. SSP Sharma in his letter to the Financial Commissioner, KBS Sidhu, on September 3 said while over 200 police personnel were sent to the spot to save the mother-daughter duo, Ropar DC Sumeet Jarangal designated Chawala as duty magistrate who didn’t reach the spot. The tehsildar could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. — TNS
