Gurdaspur, May 12

The BJP has filed a complaint against CM Capt Amarinder Singh for violating the poll code by announcing certain incentives, including enhancing the crushing capacity of the Paniyar Sugar Mill in Gurdaspur, during a rally in the Bhoa Assembly segment on Saturday and has sought that he be barred from campaigning.

BJP candidate Sunny Deol has petitioned the Returning Officer-cum-Gurdaspur DC through his representative Anil Mehta.

However, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar claimed Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had announced enhancing the mill’s capacity several months ago and that the CM had merely reiterated the same. The BJP also alleged the CM had announced the setting up of an ethanol plant for producing electricity and CNG. To this, Jakhar pointed out that the decision in this regard was taken a few months ago. “The BJP is staring at defeat and, hence, is trying to complicate matters,” he claimed. The BJP also objected to CM advancing the date for sowing paddy. Jakhar claimed the sowing dates were decided before the poll code was announced. — TNS
