The government is hoping that its efforts to push industrial growth will get momentum, with at least four industrial parks coming up in the state. All these industrial parks are expected to become functional by next year.
The Industry Department is looking at setting up the global manufacturing park over 1,000 acres in Rajpura; while another integrated industrial park is being developed over 5,000 acres also in Rajpura by a private entity.
Other than this, HPCL Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) is setting up a “plastic park” near Sangrur and a plywood park is coming up in Hoshiarpur. The idea behind developing these parks is to not just to attract new investment, but also to ensure that the existing industry (plastic in Bathinda and Sangrur and plywood in Hoshiarpur) can be developed using the cluster approach.
Officials told The Tribune that the master plan for setting up these industrial parks was ready and they would start the external development soon. “While the global manufacturing park is being set up by Punjab State Industries Export Corporation (PSIEC) in the vicinity of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor in Rajpura, the other industrial park being developed by Quark already has quite a few companies on board, and is likely to attract an investment of Rs 2,000 crore,” said a senior department officer.
With the HMEL is already committed to invest another Rs 23,000 crore in Punjab for expanding its refinery, the government is hopeful of attracting downstream plastic industry for plastic processing, plastic machinery, additives and related industries.
With the refinery at Bathinda increasing its capacity, availability of plastic raw materials like polyethylene and polypropylene will offer immense opportunities for exponential growth of the plastic processing industry. The plastic park will be developed in Sangrur.
Since Hoshiarpur already has a number of plywood manufacturing units, a plywood park is proposed there.
