Moga, March 26

The SHO of Moga City-II police station, Palwinder Singh, has been removed from post with immediate effect for having found him prima facie guilty of adopting an insensitive attitude towards the death of 28-year-old NRI Sooraj, alias Lovely, whose body was recovered from a garbage dump in the city on March 23.

The deceased’s mother, Gurmeet Kaur, named a few suspects, including a woman. But the SHO, instead of taking cognisance of her statement, initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC. Dissatisfied with the police action, family members, relatives and locals staged a protest and refused to cremate the body. They demanded legal action against the SHO. Leaders of AAP and other political parties also joined the protest.

SDM Gurwinder Singh Johal was asked to inquire into the matter. The SDM along with SP (Investigation) Harinder Pal Singh Parmar and DSP Paramjit Singh Sandhu asked the police to register a case of murder on the statement of the mother and prima facie found the SHO guilty of adopting an insensitive attitude.

The police today registered a murder case against Jeeti, Kalu, Mani, Arshi and Chinder of Moga. However, no arrests have been made so far.

SHO Palwinder Singh has been removed from the post and a departmental inquiry has been initiated. —TNS
