Gurwinder Singh alias Ditty, a retired government school physical instructor and younger brother of an independent councillor, was arrested for assault on Tuesday.

Ditty, who worked for liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda in the 2012 Vidhan Sabha elections, had shared dais at the maiden election rally addressed by SAD president Sukhbir Badal in favour of BJP nominee Arun Narang here on January 29, 2017.

Doda’s aide and independent councillor Jaswinder Singh Jassi, his brother Gurwinder Singh Ditty and Gurpreet Singh, all residents of Kothi Faiz Colony here, were booked under Sections 382, 323 and 506 of the IPC on January 9.

The city police registered a case on the complaint of Satyavan Shakya of Shiv Shakya Nagar, who alleged that the trio assaulted him outside the police station and snatched his wallet, wrist watch and gold chain on Sunday.

“Both factions had gone to the police station in support of some youths who had clashed sometime ago. As the warring groups could not reach a compromise, Jassi and his accomplices got irritated and attacked me,” alleged Shakya, who had contested the Municipal Council elections against Jassi.

Doda had fielded some candidates in the last municipal elections who were allotted a lantern symbol. Four of them won as Independents and supported the SAD-BJP alliance in electing the MC president. Jassi was one of them.
