Devotees in large numbers took part in the nagar kirtan held to commemorate the ‘first Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Granth Sahib’ (installation in Sri Harmandar Sahib in 1604) here on Monday.

Led by Panj Pyaras, the procession began from the historic Gurdwara Ramsar, where the Guru Granth Sahib was edited, and reached the Golden Temple.

At the beginning, Assa Di Vaar was read and later Bhai Sultan Singh offered the ardas. Harmandar Sahib Head Granthi Giani Jagtar Singh read the hukamnama. Giani Jagtar Singh carried the Guru Granth Sahib on his head and placed it in the beautifully decorated palanquin that was taken to the Golden Temple.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh was also present on the occasion.

Apart from sangat, gatka parties, sabha-societies, school students and school bands took part. En route, people had established stalls of langar and water.

Special ‘Jalau’ (show of splendour) were displayed in the sanctum sanctorum of Akal Takht and Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai.

The entire Golden Temple complex was beautifully decked up with exotic varieties of flowers and illuminated with colourful lights. Devotees kept visiting the holiest Sikh shrine throughout the day. Fire display was held at night.

A devotee, Tarlochan Singh Khalsa, donated a Chaur Sahib that is used to fan Guru Granth Sahib as a mark of reverence. Made of 250-gm gold, the precious object was handed over to Golden Temple Head Granthi Giani Jagtar Singh.
