A case of honour killing came to light at Doaba Bhaini village under the Koom Kalan police station today. A man allegedly killed his daughter, who had returned with her lover after five years to her parental village Doaba Bhaini in Koom Kalan.

According to sources, the deceased, Balwinder Kaur, 35, was earlier married to Harwinder Singh of Ladowal and has two children, daughter Neha (15) and son Harman (13). She had divorced her husband and had been staying in a live-in relationship with a married man Kuldeep Kumar Chhabra (45) of Ludhiana for the past five six years. Kuldeep had been disowned by his family. The accused, Gurmail Singh, father of Balwinder Kaur, could not take the insult and became mentally sick thereafter. He began to stay in a gurdwara after his daughter’s elopement.

Balwinder Kaur, it is learnt, had returned to seek apology from her parents. She along with Kuldeep and her son Harman came to the village five days back and her father too returned home and seemingly forgave the two. Last night, Harman went to sleep with his cousins at their neighbouring house and other two younger brothers of Balwinder — Gurpreet and Niek — went to Bhookhri Kalan to sell milk. Gurmail seemed to be normal and asked for a cup of tea from his sister, Gurpreet said.

According to sources, Gurmail was lying on a cot outside last night when the couple went to sleep in their room. Around 11.30 pm, Gurmail got up and attacked the two with sharp-edged weapons. After killing Harwinder, he strangled his daughter with her dupatta. He put their bodies in a cart and left the cart outside the village.

According to ADCP-4 Rajveer Singh Boparai, a case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered and the accused arrested.
