Known for contribution to Green Revolution, PAU ex-VC Khem Singh Gill passes away

LUDHIANA: Former vice chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University—who was also known for his contributions to the Green Revolution—Dr Khem Singh Gill (89) passed away on Tuesday morning.

Former vice chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University—who was also known for his contributions to the Green Revolution—Dr Khem Singh Gill passed away on Tuesday morning. He was 89 years old. 
 
An academician, geneticist and plant breeder, he was instrumental in breeding new strains of wheat, linseed and sesame. He was also the vice-president of the Kalgidhar Trust, a Sikh charity organisation. 
 
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contributions towards science in 1992. He will be cremated on September 19 in Ludhiana. 
 
Renowned agriculture economist, Dr SS Johl said that he had a long association with Dr Gill who was his colleague.
 
“He was a very learned man and knew the character of each and every plant. Nobody had to tell him about any plant, he was well aware of his subject. He will be deeply missed,” said Dr Johl.
