Chandigarh, December 3

Acting on the recommendations of the Justice Mehtab Singh Gill Commission of Inquiry into false cases, the state police have filed cancellation reports of 260 FIRs in different courts.

As per the 18th interim report submitted by the commission to the Chief Minister on Monday, strict implementation of the recommendations were made by the state government. The report specifically mentioned the case of Sukhwinder Singh of Amloh, who was booked in false case of drugs smuggling in September 2012. After hearing the case, the Commission had recommended the registration of FIR against four cops — Inspector Dalip Kumar, SI Darshan Singh, ASI Deep Singh and ASI Balbir Singh.

The commission informed the government that the Fatehgarh Sahib police district had stated before the Commission that all four cops were booked for false registration of cases in July 18.

The interim reports take stocks of the action taken on the previous reports submitted by the commission. The action taken assumes significance to underline the importance of the commission. The 18th report said 260 FIRs had already been cancelled on the recommendations of the commission. The 16th report said nearly 200 FIRs were cancelled. The commission has so far disposed of 3,220 complaints, while another 1,336 cases are pending before it.

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had constituted the commission of Inquiry immediately after his government took over in March 2017. Congress workers and leaders had demanded such a commission alleging large-scale misuse of police power against Congressmen during the SAD-BJP rule.
