Chandigarh, September 20

A three-member team of the Punjab Police today arrested the prime accused in the Jassi honour killing case — her mother, Malkiat Kaur, and maternal uncle Surjit Singh Badesha, both based in Canada. The team will reach India tomorrow. Both are likely to be produced before a Sangrur judge on Friday.

The team, led by SP (Headquarters), Patiala, Kanwardeep Kaur, includes Dhuri DSP Akashdeep Singh Aulakh and Inspector Deepinder Pal Singh.

The extradition was ordered by Canada’s Supreme Court earlier this month, 17 years after the murder.

Jassi and her husband, Sukhwinder Singh Mithu of Kaunke Khosa (Jagraon), were attacked on June 8, 2000, near Malerkotla by contract killers allegedly hired by Jassi’s mother and uncle. — TNS
