The Punjab Technical Education Minister and the private Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are heading for a showdown over admissions under the post-matric scholarship scheme for Scheduled Caste (SC) students.

Reacting strongly to the private ITIs refusing admissions under the scholarship scheme, Technical Education Minister Charanjit Channi said admission had to be done as per the reservation policy set by the government and no institute could refuse admission on available seats.

“Those refusing admissions will face strict action. We are carrying out inspections to ensure that the ITIs improve their infrastructure. Pressure tactics by private institutes would not work,” said Channi.

Punjab ITI Association president Shimanshu Gupta said it was not possible to admit students on the revised fee under the scholarship fee. He alleged that the department was more inclined towards promoting polytechnics.
