Chandigarh, November 8

The dilapidated condition of the historic Qila Sarai in Sultanpur Lodhi, related to the life of Guru Nanak, has finally caught attention of the Punjab Government.

The fort currently houses the Sultanpur Lodhi police station and DSP’s office and is being used to dump case property. Directions have been issued to shift the police station set up on the premises of the sarai.

Qila Sarai is one of the historic links in the 3-km heritage walk through Gurdwara Guru Ka Bagh, Gurdwara Kothri Sahib, Old House of Bebe Nanaki and Gurdwara Hatt Sahib. Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Suresh Kumar, while participating in a heritage walk, also raised the issue.

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who was in Sultanpur Lodhi to take part in Sehaj Path, announced preserving the iconic sarai as a heritage building.

As per documented history, the monument dates back to 800-year-old Lodhi dynasty and its two gates, Lahori Gate and Delhi Gate (which lies permanently closed on the back side), were a part of the erstwhile GT Road.
