Google expands digital literacy initiative to state

CHANDIGARH: Continuing with its digital literacy initiative aimed at empowering women in rural India, Google India and Tata Trusts today announced to expand its programme to Punjab.

Continuing with its digital literacy initiative aimed at empowering women in rural India, Google India and Tata Trusts today announced to expand its programme to Punjab.

In a press conference, Google said in Punjab, the programme would cover around 5,000 villages, starting from Paras Rampur, Kotli Than Singh and Burj, Vehra, from Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala districts.

Talking about the socio-economic impact of the initiative in India, Neha Barjatya, Chief Internet Saathi, Google India, said, “Internet Saathi programme has shown us that with the right opportunities, there is no limit to what women can achieve. It is remarkable to see the passion of women in rural India, who are learning about Internet, not just for their own needs, but for their families, children and their communities.

Raman Kalyanakrishnan, Head-Strategy, Tata Trusts, said for inclusive growth and societal progress, it was imperative that women in rural India were provided adequate opportunities and knowledge.
