Glowing tributes were paid to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister and the founder of the modern India, on his fifty-third death anniversary here on Saturday.

A simple and solemn function was organised at the Punjab Congress Bhawan, which was presided over by PCC president Sunil Jakhar.

Paying tributes to Nehru, Jakhar said it was because of the great progressive, secular and liberal vision of the first Prime Minister that India today is the world’s largest and successful democracy.

“When we look around and see the strife in other countries, we appreciate the vision of our great leaders like Pandit Nehru, who bequeathed great traditions of democracy and secularism to us,” he said.

Jakhar said that not only did Pandit Nehru lay the strong political and democratic foundations of the country, he also scripted all-inclusive development raising the living standards of millions of people.
