The district police arrested gangster Gurbax Singh Sewewala after an encounter at Paras Ram Nagar here last night. Gurbax, a resident of Sewewala village in Faridkot district, was wanted in several cases of murder, loot and extortion in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and other states.

He has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. IG Mukhwinder Singh Chhina said a CIA-2 team of the police received a tip-off that Gurbax was travelling in the area in a white Honda City car without a number plate.

The CIA-2 team, along with ASI Harpreet Singh of the Moga police, laid a naka on the Gurukul road and intercepted a white car. Gurbax, who was carrying two pistols, started firing at the police. The cops, too, opened fire. A few minutes later, the police arrested the gangster and recovered two .32-bore pistols and eight rounds from his possession.

Gurbax was heading the Davinder Bambiha gang after the death of gangster and sharpshooter Bambiha, who was killed in a police encounter near Rampura (Bathinda) in September 2016. A court today remanded him in four-day police custody.

A preliminary investigation revealed that 12 cases against Gurbax were pending in Punjab — 11 in Faridkot district and one in Bathinda.
