Gangster, aide held with arms, ammo

JALANDHAR: The counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab Police today arrested gangster Harminder Singh, alias Pehlwan, alias Mannu Mehmapuria, of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria''s gang, along with his aide, after an encounter in Bhogpur.

The counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab Police today arrested gangster Harminder Singh, alias Pehlwan, alias Mannu Mehmapuria, of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's gang, along with his aide, after an encounter in Bhogpur. Three pistols, a rifle, 161 live cartridges and a wild spray, used by criminals against cops to make them unconscious, was seized from them.

Harminder hails from Mehmachak village and his accomplice Honey Kumar of Achli Gate is a resident of Batala, Gurdaspur district.

Addressing a press conference, AIG, Counter-Intelligence, Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said cops had got a tip-off that the gangster was heading towards Bhogpur for committing a crime along with Honey in two cars. A team, led by Inspector Pritpal Singh, caught them after the accused allegedly opened fire at them.

The AIG said, “During preliminary interrogation, Mannu revealed that he was a close aide of notorious gangster Bhagwanpuria. He was arrested in 2015 for a murder. During his stay in Amritsar Jail, he shared barrack with Bhagwanpuria. In 2017, Mannu escaped with the help of his aides in Batala and committed murders, bank robberies, vehicle snatchings in different districts. He also murdered Bhagwanpuria’s rival gangster Gopi Ghanshampuria."

The police said Honey revealed that he had a close association with Mannu and Rana Kandowaila. Earlier two cases of theft were registered against him and he used to make threatening calls to prominent people,” the AIG said. Both gangsters will be produced before the magistrate.
