The police on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-district gang of robbers with the arrest of four of its members, and seized a .32 bore pistol, six cartridges, two iron rods and a sharp-edged weapon from them.

The accused — Raj Kumar, Kuldeep Singh, Sukhchain Singh and Akashdeep Singh (all residents of Ludhiana district) — were wanted for robbing Rs16.5 lakh after breaking open an ATM in Ludhiana about a month ago, the police said.

Their accomplices, Sunil Kumar of Ludhiana and Gurinderjit Singh of Fazilka, have also been booked.

Jagdish Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the four arrested accused were already facing cases of loot, robbery and snatching in Ludhiana district. “The gang robbed commuters at gunpoint at night in the Sidhwan Bet area of Ludhiana district,” he said.

Fearing arrest by the Ludhiana police, they came to Fazilka to take shelter at the house of Raju, a relative of Raj Kumar. Sources said the accused had allegedly gone to buy drugs from Gurinderjit when the police nabbed them.

They have been booked under Sections 399 and 420 of the IPC, and NDPS Act and Arms Act. — OC
