Four youths drown as car falls into Gang Canal

Four youths were killed after the car in which they were travelling in fell into Gang Canal near Islamwala village on the Fazilka-Malout road.

The deceased have been identified as Gurpreet Singh (22), Gurlal Singh (20), Jassa Singh (21) and Partap Singh (21), all residents of Midha village of Muktsar district. The wedding of Gurpreet Singh was to be solemnised on April 18 and his shagun ceremony was scheduled for Sunday.

Police sources said the youths were working as labourers with a combine harvester owner, Jarnail Singh of Odian village of Fazilka district.

The youths had gone to Madhya Pardesh to harvest the wheat crop a few days ago. They returned on April 12 and left for Midha village at 8 pm in their employer’s car. As they reached near Islamwala village, the car fell into the Gang Canal.

Soon, divers were pressed into service and they spotted the car under the bridge on Sunday morning. The bodies of the deceased were found inside the locked car, which was fished out with the help of cranes.

The post-mortem of the deceased was conducted at the local Civil Hospital on Sunday evening.

Two killed in road mishap

Ropar: Two youths were killed when their motorcycle collided head-on with a tempo traveller on the Nawanshahr road near here on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Harman Singh (18) and Jaskaran Singh (17) from Paniali Kalan village near Balachaur. While Harman was a student of Class XII, his cousin was studying in Class XI. According to the police, both the youth were going to pay obeisance on the occasion of Baisakhi at Gurdwara Tibbi Sahib on a motorcycle. TNS
