An ex-serviceman died in an accidental fire from his .12-bore gun at his house in Landeke village here on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Manjit Singh (45). After retiring from the Army, he had joined as a security guard in a local branch of Punjab National Bank.

Before leaving for duty on Wednesday, he was checking the gun as usual when he accidentally pressed its trigger. Most of the pellets of the shot hit his neck, leaving him dead on the spot.

The police reached the spot and took the body into their custody. It was handed over to the family members after postmortem.

Meanwhile, the police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC into the incident after recording the statement of Raj Kaur, wife of the deceased.
