Nazar Singh Gill (111), believed to be Europe’s oldest man, breathed his last at his native Fazilpur village in the district on Saturday.

A resident of England for the last 50 years, he had recently celebrated his 111th birthday at his village on June 5.

His eldest son Kartar Singh, who resides in the village, said Nazar Singh died after suffering two consecutive heart attacks on Saturday.

He said though he was not suffering from any disease, his physical condition had deteriorated in the last few days. He said his father was emotionally attached to his village.

“This time when he came to the village, he told us that he will not go back to England and will breathe his last on this soil,” Kartar Singh said.

He and his younger brother Sohan Singh look after the family’s agricultural land. He said his mother too had breathed her last in the village in 2006.

The whole village got grief-stricken after hearing the demise of its son. “He was a nice human being. Even as he could not walk without an aid, he had visited village gurdwara on the last day of his life. He would often spend time with fellow villagers,” said Darshan Kaur, sarpanch.

Nazar Singh’s cremation will be held tomorrow at the village crematorium.
