Jalandhar, April 20

English medium sections will be introduced from Class VI to IX in 1,800 government schools of the state. In these schools, separate sections will be created for students opting for English medium.

The English medium system is not being introduced in Class X. However, depending on the success of the system, it might be introduced later.

The DPI (Secondary Education), Paramjit Singh, said, “In a phased manner, subjects will be taught in English across 1,800 schools in the state. In the first phase, these 1,800 schools have been chosen, where separate sections of the English medium shall be set up for students. The sections will be created within a month. More might be added later. As majority of the students in the Education Department schools are being taught in Punjabi or Hindi, when going for higher education in science and other streams, they lose an edge. We don’t want our students to lose out in higher education. English medium sections are being introduced to give an edge to students and to encourage students to opt for the Punjab School Education Board.”

While there are a total 24,000 primary and upper primary schools in Punjab, the English sections will be started in 1,800 upper primary schools of the state.
