EcoSikh, a US-based organisation, said it would soon issue a Green Gurdwara Guide to make the 50,000 gurdwaras world over eco-friendly. EcoSikh president Dr Rajwant Singh today said he met SGPC chief Avtar Singh in this regard.

He said gurdwaras would have a green belt, water harvesting system and other eco-friendly systems in place. Singh said the EcoSikh would present the Sikh plan at the United Nations-sponsored meet in Bristol, UK, in September. The meet called “Faiths and Sustainable Development Goals” will be attended by the representatives of the World Bank, European Union, UNDP, UNEP and various other international bodies. These organisations are looking to engage with various faith-based initiatives on environmental issues.

EcoSikh has also planned to organise workshops for Sikh ragis, dhadies, granthis and preachers, asking them to focus on environment related issues in their discourses.

It will also hold a programme to create awareness among people about water conservation. The NGO will also organise workshops for youth on climate related issues. Motivated by the EcoSikh, the SGPC has started promoting organic farming at its farms. It has selected Amrtisar and Nankana Sahib for organising projects related to environment.

“We want that more trees be planted in the Golden Temple complex,” said Singh. The organisation has also submitted a proposal to create a green belt in 100 acres at Nankana Sahib. Singh said he would also take part in the Climate Summit in Paris later this year. He said the EcoSikh would engage the Sikh community worldwide.
