Chandigarh, September 23

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has urged leaders of the farming community in the state to stop “misleading the farmers with false statements on the issue of loan waiver”. He said the process for waiver had already been initiated by his government in right earnest.

In a statement issued here a day after various kisan unions began a dharna on the outskirts of Patiala, alleging that the government’s waiver scheme would benefit only a small number of farmers, the CM said baseless charges were being made against his government by politically motivated farmer leaders.

The waiver scheme announced by the government, and set to be notified soon would benefit 10.25 lakh of the 13 lakh farming families who took loans, he said, pointing out that this constituted nearly 80 per cent of the borrowers in the farming community. — TNS
