Ludhiana, February 19

A day after the Ludhiana court granted permission to conduct DNA examination of the gangrape accused, the police today brought three of them — Jagroop Singh, Sadiq Ali and Surmo — for DNA sampling.

SSP, Ludhiana Rural, Varinder Singh Brar said DNA technology could strengthen investigation and prosecution in sexual violence cases. Permission for identification parade of the accused would also be taken, he added.

The interrogation of the six accused had led to startling revelations. DIG Ranbir Singh Khatra said they had confessed to having committed several sexual assaults and rapes in that secluded place of Issewal in the past, but nobody dared to inform the police. “Since no complaint had been received, we cannot pursue any probe in those cases,” he added. — TNS
