Chandigarh, February 19

Jagtar Singh Tara, an accused in the 1995 assassination of then Chief Minister Beant Singh, has told the court that “human bomb” Dilawar Singh was the mastermind, not Jagtar Singh Hawara. The recording of his statements under Section 313 of the CrPC was completed today. The next date of hearing is March 9, when the final arguments will be held.

Refusing to provide evidence in his defence, Tara said his six-page letter submitted to the court last month should be treated as his final version. Defence counsel Simranjit Singh said Tara, replying to a question of the CBI counsel, said he acted on Dilawar’s directions.

Tara had told the court earlier that he had dropped Dilawar and Balwant Singh Rajoana at the Punjab Secretariat on the day of the assassination. — TNS
