Abohar, June 15

Some of the local roads that have been potholed for over a decade are now finally being repaired or given a fresh layer of bitumen-stone metal carpeting in Abohar.

For many, this has come as a surprise as the Municipal Council has no working President and the additional charge of Executive Officer is with an official who is posted somewhere near Bathinda.

Pramil Kalani of the BJP resigned from the MC president’s post on March 10, 2018, citing harassment but the state government has not taken any decision in this matter. Kalani had initiated the road repair exercise two years back but could not get the work completed as Rs 2 crore released by the alliance government in the last decade was “insufficient”.

These days, a lot of activity is visible outside the Nehru Park, Arya Samaj Mandir, Sethi Palace, Sunil Cinema, Maharana Pratap Market, Shanker Market, Major Surinder Chowk and the BSNL complex.

District Youth Congress ex-president Sandeep Jakhar and district Congress president Vimal Thatai said Minister of Local Bodies Navjot Singh Sidhu and PPCC president Sunil Jakhar, while launching the Amrut Yojana here in October last year, had promised to bail out the town from the neglect that the previous SAD-BJP govt had subjected it to. “The first phase of the Amrut Yojana is likely to be completed by the end of next year. By then, most of the localities will get sewerage and drinking water facilities, he added.
