Mohali, May 18

In a relief to former DGP SS Virk, a special court here today accepted a cancellation report in a corruption case registered against him.

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) had, on February 27, moved an application seeking cancellation of the case. The agency had said in the report that no substantial evidence was found against Virk.

In the previous hearing, VB AIG Surjit Singh had submitted the Vigilance had no objection to cancelling the case against Virk.

Sources said Virk had filed 16 petitions in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, claiming to be innocent.

The VB had, on September 8, 2007, booked the former police officer on charges of possessing assets disproportionate to his sources of income and misuse of official position.

The case was registered following instructions from then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The charge-sheet was filed in August 2008, in which the former DGP was accused of possessing unaccounted money of Rs3.12 crore in several bank accounts.

The 1970-batch IPS officer Virk was booked under Sections 168, 169, 216, 218, 420, 447, 448, 467, 468, 471, 506 and 120 of IPC, and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
