Sangrur, September 23

After facing harassment at the hands of a relative for a piece of land, a couple allegedly committed suicide in the Aba colony of Tapa under Barnala district late last evening.

On the basis of a suicide note purportedly written by the couple, the police have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC and conducting raids to arrest accused Mithu Ram.

Naresh Kumar (50) and his second wife Niko Devi first consumed celphos at their house in Aba colony late last evening and then Kumar hanged himself from a fan of his room. Devi fell on the floor while hanging herself and died.

Three daughters of the couple are married while the fourth is unmarried and had gone to neighbour’s place when both ended their lives.

“In the suicide note, the victims alleged that they were being harassed by their relative Mithu Ram for a piece of land in the city. The accused wanted to take possession of the land and was harassing the deceased by making false complaints to the police. We have registered a case against Mithu and conducting raids to arrest him,” said Rachpal Singh Sandhu, Tapa SHO. — TNS
