An assistant munshi was shot dead by an ex-serviceman inside Mahilpur police station in the district on Sunday afternoon.

Shot at by the ex-serviceman, the munshi was badly injured and died later in hospital.

An ASI who was also shot at by the accused, however, managed to get aside. The accused was nabbed and booked for murder.

The ex-serviceman carrying his double barrel gun reached the police station at 2.50 pm. The sentry at the gate asked him the reason for carrying a firearm. On this, the accused told him that he had come to deposit his licenced gun and ammunition in the police station.

The sentry sent him to assistant munshi, head constable Amarjeet Singh.

The police claim that accused Surinder Kumar Fauji, a resident of Mahilpur, opened fire at Amarjeet Singh without any provocation. Amarjeet was badly injured. Meanwhile, when ASI Sham Lal, present in the room, tried to nab the accused, the accused also shot at him. The ASI managed to get aside.

Hearing the gunshots, other policemen came to the room and nabbed the accused. Injured assistant munshi Amarjeet Singh was taken to Mahilpur Civil Hospital in a critical condition. Given his serious condition, he was referred to a private specialty hospital in Hoshiarpur. Upon reaching the hospital, doctors declared him dead.

According to sources, as the accused went inside the police station, there was heated exchange between him and the Amarjeet. After which Surinder Kumar Fauji, in a fit of rage, shot Amarjeet.

SSP Jayabalan Elenchazhian also visited the police station after the incident.

The accused had retired from the army in 2007. He got a licenced double barrel gun and also worked as a security guard in many banks. According to sources, the accused allegedly had a drinking habit due to which he could not work anywhere for long.

The police have started investigations by arresting the accused and registering a case under various sections of the IPC, including murder, and the Arms Act against him.

The SSP told The Tribune that the reason behind the murder was not known yet and an investigation was on.

Asked that if there was any old enmity between the two, he said, “It’s a matter of investigation. It’s a very unfortunate incident and we are investigating the matter.”
