Gurdaspur, January 7

The Border Security Force (BSF) seized over 19-kg heroin, valued at around Rs 100 crore in the international market, from the Adhian border outpost in Dorangla area of Gurdaspur district today, an official said.

BSF troops detected suspicious activity near the fence early this morning, he said, adding that the troops challenged the smugglers, who did not pay heed to the warning.

The BSF personnel then fired a few rounds, following which the smugglers escaped using the cover of darkness, the official said.

A search operation was launched and 19 packets of heroin, weighing 1 kg each, were found. Officials said a plastic pipe had also been recovered.

The recovery was made after the BSF troops with the Punjab Police. Sources said Pakistani-based smugglers pushed the contraband into the Indian side, taking advantage of the early-morning fog.

The BSF had seized 7-kg heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 35 crore in the international market, at the same outpost in March last year.

Yesterday, Rs 4-crore heroin was seized from a peon of the Gurdaspur Municipal Committee. Peon Bharat Gill and his wife, Anita Gill, were nabbed after their car was searched at a check post on the Bariar bypass and the contraband recovered. The couple was on its way here from Amritsar. — PTI & TNS
