Two weeks after the assault on the Municipal Council president Rakesh Dhuria, hundreds of BJP-SAD activists staged a district-level demonstration outside the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police here today to protest police “inaction” in regard to the attack.

The activists also took out a protest procession from the Sanjeev Cinema chowk to District Administrative Complex braving the hot weather. The protesters were demanding arrest of the assailants.

Rakesh Dhuria, BJP leader, said it was a politically motivated attack but the police failed to identify and nab the assailants. Dhuria said they had met the SSP on Monday and presented a memorandum demanding arrest of the culprits, but to no avail, thus they staged the protest today. “The party will decided the next course of action,” said Dhuria.

When contacted, Fazilka SSP Deepak Hilori said the police were investigating the matter and the assailants would be nabbed soon.

Dhuria, also a commission agent, was assaulted by three unidentified motorcycle-borne miscreants on June 18 at a local grain market while he was on his way back to home on a scooter after closing his commission agent shop after 9 pm. He was injured and admitted to the local Civil Hospital and was discharged after three days.
