In brazen disregard for law, an “underage” driver of a Mercedes car allegedly tried to run over a traffic policeman, forcing the latter to jump onto its bonnet to save himself, at Hero Bakery Chowk here on Wednesday.

The policeman suffered minor head injuries and was admitted to a private hospital. The driver fled the scene after the incident.

The police have impounded the car (PB-08-BL-0941) registered in the name of Rajesh Khaneja.

ADCP (Traffic) Sukhpal Singh Brar said the incident took place around 6.30 pm when traffic wing’s Home Guard Surinder Singh tried to stop the car for jumping the red light.

“The Home Guard on seeing the car driver jump the red light blocked its path. Instead of halting, the driver slowed down the car and tried to run him over. The policeman jumped onto the bonnet to save himself and stop the car, suffering minor head injuries,” said Brar. The police were yet to verify if the driver was underage.

A doctor said the policeman had a headache but was out of danger. “There is no outer injury but we will conduct a detailed examination to check for any internal injuries,” he added.

Inspector Jatinder Kumar, SHO of police division 5, said an ASI visited the hospital, but the doctors said he was unfit to give a statement. Action would be taken based on his statement, he said. No FIR had been registered so far.
