Chandigarh, January 4

The Bhakra dam has been adjudged the best-maintained project (functional for more than 50 years) at the national level by the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP).

The dam is supplying around 16,000 million cubic metres of water and 6,500 million units of energy annually to the partner states for meeting irrigation, power and drinking water requirements for more than 54 years. Two power houses of the dam on the left and right banks of the Sutlej contribute 1,379 MW of power to the Northern Grid, besides playing the important role of supplying “black start power” in the event of a grid collapse.

The award was received by DK Sharma, Chairman, Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), from Dr Satya Pal Singh, Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation at a function held in New Delhi on January 3.

Sharma was also conferred the Central Board of Irrigation and Power Special Recognition Award for Exceptional Leadership and Contribution to the Indian Water and Power Sectors by the minister.
