Amid persisting disquiet among Dalit leaders of the Doaba and Malwa regions over being marginalised in the allocation of ticket for the Lok Sabha polls, behind the scene efforts to placate the sulking senior Dalit leader Mohinder Singh Kaypee has paid off.

After getting an assurance from the party’s top brass of suitable adjustment in the organisational structure, the former PPCC chief has silenced his rebellion tone since yesterday.

He has been assured of suitable rehabilitation in the organisational structure at the AICC level or could be made to fight the byelections for the reserved Chabbewal Assembly segment, getting vacated in event of sitting MLA getting elected as MP from Hoshiarpur.

Kaypee had been upset over the party’s ticket from Jalandhar being given to sitting MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh. During camping in the national Capital for the last few days, the former MP had meetings with senior leaders like Ahmed Patel, who advised him to get in touch with Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, whose assurance for rehabilitation would matter at last.

Sources said some senior Dalit leaders, including Cabinet minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who is related to Mohinder Kayee, played the role of interlocutors between the Chief Minister and Kaypee to break the ice.

Though Amritsar MLA and Balmiki leader Dr Raj Kumar Verka had last week brought him along to meet the Chief Minister and had even talked about the decision of the Jalandhar ticket being reconsidered. But nothing thereafter happened as the former PPCC chief had even mooted the proposal of floating a “Taksali Congress front”.

Interlocutors facilitated another round of telephonic talk between the Chief Minister and Mohinder kaypee, following which the Dalit leader is learnt to have reassured him commitment towards his mother party (Congress).

Confirming that he had talked to the Chief Minister, Kaypee said he was committed to the party and had full faith in the leadership.
