Arrested with heroin, ASI shoots self in STF custody

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), who was nabbed for drug peddling by the Special Task Force (STF), allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at the STF office here this morning.

The deceased ASI, Avtar Singh, was posted at Gharinda police station. He was arrested by the STF along with another ASI Jorawar Singh, while allegedly consuming heroin at Bhaka Chowk in Attari.

The STF had recovered 10 gm of heroin from Avtar and 5 gm from Jorawar Singh along with lighters, silver role, cash and car. Sources said STF officials interrogated the accused till late evening. This morning he asked to go washroom. On returning, he took an AK-47 assault rifle lying in a room at the STF office and allegedly shot himself.

Jagjit Singh, SHO, Mohkampura police station, said, “The ASI shot himself with an assault rifle. A judicial inquiry has been marked in the case. We have filed proceedings under Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code.”

The magistrate visited the office of STF in this regard. The postmortem of the body would be conducted on Wednesday. Avtar Singh was a resident of Naryangarh. The family of the deceased refused to talk to the media. Senior STF officials did not respond to the phone calls and also denied the media access to its office.
