Chamkaur Sahib, June 13

A 23-year-old Army jawan who had allegedly committed suicide at his place of posting at Poonch on Monday was cremated at his native place here on Wednesday. The deceased, Ranjot Singh, a gunner, had shot himself with his service weapon at his post allegedly due to family problem.

His body was brought on Wednesday morning. His father Gurmukh Singh lit the fire.

Gurmukh Singh said his son got married on November 15 last year and 20 days later left for his place of posting. “This time when he came home, we came to know that he had some dispute with his wife,” he said.

He added that Ranjot left for Poonch on June 7 and four days later, they were informed that he had shot himself. He alleged that his son was being threatened by his in-laws, adding that he had lodged a complaint against them with the police.
