A meeting of the district unit of the All India Anganwari Workers and Helpers Union was held under the chairmanship of state unit president Saroj Chhapriwala at Jalalabad today.

The workers condemned the arrest of CPI leaders Hans Raj Golden, general secretary, CPI district unit, and district president of the All-India Kisan Sabha Surinder Singh Dhandian and block president, General Reta Mazdoor Union, Jalalabad, Teja Singh, on December 27 for staging a protest against the Fazilka police on December 22.

They have urged the government to take stern action against police officials responsible for arresting the leaders who were holding peaceful protest. “Peaceful protest is the right of every citizen for getting justice,” said Chhapriwala.

She alleged that the police invited the leaders for talks, but instead arrested them.

They were protesting registration of a criminal case against Ashok Kamboj, vice-president, Anti-Corruption Bureau, an NGO, in a monetary dispute case.

The police had booked 10 activists and 40-50 unidentified persons under Section 353 and 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
