Congress leader Ajaib Singh Bhatti was on Friday elected Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha amid ruckus by SAD MLAs.

Brahm Mohindra escorted Bhatti to the Deputy Speaker’s seat.

Meanwhile, SAD MLAs continued to raise slogans demanding debt waiver relief for farmers as the CM read out Bhatti’s political history.

As a former PCS officer, Bhatti had served as Additional Deputy Commissioner in Muktsar and Bathinda districts. He joined the Congress in 2007 and is a native of Bathinda.

Later, the AAP decided to participate in the proceedings.

Leader of the Opposition HS Phoolka before entering the House said, “It would have been better had the Deputy Speaker been chosen from the opposition. This is tradition in some states. All the same, we congratulate Bhatti.”
