Moga, May 26

The Excise and Taxation Department with the help of the local police has recovered 1,190 cases (14,280 bottles) of liquor manufactured in the distillery owned by a senior Congress MLA and former minister, Rana Gurjit Singh, and his family from Baghapurana town in the Moga district.

It was most likely being smuggled to Shahkot in Jalandhar district. An Inspector of the Excise Department, Jugraj Singh Sandhu, said the truck from which the liquor was recovered was bearing the registration number PB-08-BC-9549, which belongs to the Jalandhar district.

He said bottles of “First Choice”, a cheap liquor brand, were recovered from the truck at Baghapurana town. This brand of liquor is manufactured at Rana Sugars Limited (distillery division), a company which is owned by Rana Gurjit Singh and his family members.

The SHO of the Baghapurana police station, Jangjit Singh, said a case under the Excise Act was registered against the driver and a few others. — TNS
