Ahead of Diwali, the Health Department cracked a whip against sweet shop owners and destroyed coloured sweets prepared by a few shopkeepers in Fazilka today.

Dr Daler Singh Multani, Civil Surgeon, Fazilka, said sweet sellers had been warned in advance not to prepare coloured sweets which are harmful for the health.

He said a department team led by Gagandeep Kaur, Food Safety Officer, inspected the shops and destroyed quintals of coloured sweets lying in the shops today. He warned of strict action in future if the practice continued.

Dr Multani said on a tip-off, the department confiscated two quintals of spurious desi ghee from a shop in Abohar on Monday. He said the ghee had been sealed and sample dispatched to government laboratory for testing. He urged sellers to prepare sweets in hygienic conditions.
